From the Bridge of the recently completed White Star liner Teutonic (Yard No. 208), H.R.H. Prince Albert Victor declared the Alexandra Graving Dock at Belfast open on this day in 1889. The Prince was taken on a tour of the pump house and invited to start the pumps.

It had been intended that the Prince would see the dock completely emptied of water, but owing to another engagement, there remained four or five feet of water in the dock when he drove away. It took about two hours to completely empty the graving dock of water.

Teutonic remained in the Graving Dock for ‘about a fortnight.’ During this time her propellers were dismantled for inspection.
