Rostron is known for his heroic efforts as Captain of RMS Carpathia, which arrived within hours of RMS Titanic’s sinking on April 15th, 1912, rescuing 713 passengers.

The Tiffany & Co 18ct gold timepiece was bought and presented to Captain Rostron by Madeline Astor, Marian Thayer and Eleanor Widener in May 1912. Astor, Thayer and Widener were the wives to three of the richest men in the world when they boarded Titanic.

After being left widowed by the disaster, the women chose to gift the watch to Captain Rostron as an expression of their gratitude for his efforts on that fateful night.

The watch is engraved with the message, “Presented to Captain Rostron with heartfelt gratitude and appreciation of three survivors of the Titanic, April 15th 1912, Mrs John B. Thayer, Mrs John Jacob Astor and Mrs George D. Widener.”
